  9. File-Ex adds file management functions like Find, Copy, Delete, 
  10. Rename, and MakeDir to the Open and Save dialogs of most Windows
  11. applications automatically (any that use the Windows common 
  12. dialogs in COMMDLG.DLL), and can be trained to work with almost 
  13. any other program.
  14.  
  15. If you have just installed File-Ex and are reading this from 
  16. the Notepad program, try it out now by selecting File from the 
  17. menu, then Open.  You should see buttons and the 'Recent...' 
  18. and 'Favorite...' lists at the bottom of the Open dialog.  
  19. If you need help, click the 'File-Ex' button, and then the 
  20. Help button from that dialog.

  22. File-Ex runs as a taskbar tray icon in Windows 95 -- you should
  23. see a small File-Ex icon at the far right of the taskbar.  Right-
  24. click on this for the main menu, or double-click on it to bring
  25. up a dialog with configuration, help, & option functions.

  33. Our freeware program "Delayer" is also included with this package.
  34.  
  35. While Delayer can be used for other purposes as you like, it was
  36. included here to combat a problem caused by some programs that
  37. prevent File-Ex from working.  This problem happens when some 
  38. other programs (such as Excite's "Direct" program) run after or
  39. at the same time as File-Ex, typically during Windows start-up.
  40. The errant programs trap the necessary system "hooks" that 
  41. File-Ex needs, so File-Ex cannot function.  This is not a problem,
  42. however, if File-Ex is forced to run AFTER the other programs.
  43.  
  44. Delayer is designed to simply delay execution of a program for
  45. a specified number of seconds.  Delayer is not used by default, 
  46. and if you don't encounter the problems described above then you
  47. don't need to use it.  However, if you do find that File-Ex doesn't
  48. work after Windows booting up, try using Delayer in the StartUp
  49. group/folder to execute File-Ex about 3 seconds later.

  58. ** Important note for users of a Windows 3.1 version of File-Ex **
  59.  
  60. The File-Ex Setup routine will not overwrite a FILEEX.DAT file
  61. if it already exists in the program directory -- this is to avoid
  62. erasing your trained applications when upgrading.
  63.  
  64. However, if you used the Windows 3.1 version and install the Win95
  65. version in the same directory, this will prevent the new FILEEX.DAT
  66. file from being installed.  Applications trained in Windows 3.1
  67. will not be recognized in Windows 95, so this is a problem.
  68.  
  69. To avoid the problem, either delete the old FILEEX.DAT file before
  70. installing the Win95 version, or install the Win95 version to a
  71. new directory.

  73. (Note: It is not necessarily recommended to do a Complete Removal 
  74. of the old File-Ex, since this will also delete file histories and 
  75. configuration preferences.)

  165. If you're not familiar with File-Ex, please read the
  166. 'Overview' section in the Help file after installation.

  169. To install File-Ex, run SETUP.EXE from Windows:
  170.  
  171. 1. From the Start Menu, select Run...
  172.  
  173. 2. In the Command Line box, type d:\path\SETUP, where 'd' is 
  174.    the letter of the drive and 'path' is the directory where 
  175.    the File-Ex files are.
  176.  
  177.    For example:
  178.      C:\FILEEX\SETUP
  179.  
  180. 3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
  181.  
  182. 4. After File-Ex installation is complete, it will need to 
  183.    validate some files.  This will happen automatically the 
  184.    first time File-Ex is invoked, so you don't need to do 
  185.    anything special for this to happen.

  187. 5. If you're not familiar with File-Ex, open the Help file 
  188.    and read through the Overview sections.

  191. Technical information on installation
  192. -------------------------------------
  193. The installation procedure does the following:
  194.  Copy appropriate files to the Program and Data directories.
  195.  Add a File-Ex group with appropriate icons.
  196.  Add File-Ex to the startup group.
  197.  Verify that the operations succeeded.
  198.  Run File-Ex if requested.
  199.  Run notepad to display the readme.txt file if requested.

  201. When File-Ex is actually invoked for the first time (through a
  202. File/Open or File/Save command, or by automatically loading 
  203. File-Ex), it validates the information files (fileex.hlp, 
  204. readme.txt, order.txt).  This ensures that File-Ex cannot be 
  205. modified and re-distributed with different company contact/order
  206. information.

  209. What files should be where, after installation

  211. These files should be in your File-Ex program directory :

  228. The file FILEEX.DAT will be copied to the 'Data' directory.  
  229. (This is usually the same as your Program directory, but may 
  230. be different, for instance, in a network environment where the 
  231. Program directory is shared.  The FILEEX.DAT file should be in
  232. a place not shared by users, similar to INI files.)

  234. These files are not copied anywhere, and are not needed by 
  235. File-Ex after setup:

  238.   VENDINFO.DIZ

  240. The files COMMEX.INI and FILEEX.INI will be created by the 
  241. Setup program, and will be placed in the Windows directory.

  243. The file FILEEX.LOG will be created in the Windows directory, 
  244. and is useful for troubleshooting.  If everything works after 
  245. installation, this may be deleted.

  249. About the Evaluation Period
  250. ---------------------------

  252. File-Ex is distributed as a shareware trial version.  This 
  253. means that you are free to try it out for 30 days. It will 
  254. be fully functional during that time, so you can try all of 
  255. its functions.

  257. After using it for 30 days (not necessarily calendar days, but
  258. when it's been used on 30 different days), some of the functions
  259. will be unavailable.  You will still be able to use the basic 
  260. functions like Copy and Delete, but the advanced functions 
  261. (Find and MakeDir) will not be available unless you register 
  262. (purchase) the program.

  265. Giving Copies to Friends -- (Please Do!)

  268. Shareware works best when you 'share' it with other people!  If
  269. you like this program, we would appreciate it if you spread it 
  270. around.  Give copies to friends and co-workers, or even upload 
  271. it to your favorite BBS.

  273. Please only distribute the original compressed (.ZIP) file that 
  274. you received File-Ex in.  This is the only way to have the 
  275. complete file set needed to install File-Ex, since the File-Ex 
  276. directory after installation does not contain all of the 
  277. necessary installation files.

  280.   it!  The registered copy contains your registration key file,
  281.   and giving this to someone else is illegal.  Please only 
  282.   distribute the shareware trial version!

  339. Troubleshooting
  340. ---------------

  342. Please see the Help file for complete information, but here
  343. are some important notes about programs that File-Ex will
  344. not work with:
  345.  
  346. File-Ex does not cooperate well with some other programs that 
  347. do the same thing (modify the file dialogs).  If you have these,
  348. then you should disable them when running File-Ex.  These include:
  349.  - Instant File Access (don't load it at the same time)
  350.  - Long File Names (some reported problems, but usually works)
  351.  - LFNs Now (don't load it at the same time)
  352.  - Norton File Assist / LFN Enabler (disable it from the desktop options)
  353.  - Q.E.D. (can't co-exist with File-Ex since it changes the common dialogs)
  354.  
  355. Excite Direct will disable File-Ex, unless File-Ex is started AFTER
  356. Excite Direct is loaded.  This is a bug in Excite Direct, but can
  357. be avoided by using the Delayer program included with File-Ex.
  358.  
  359. AutoCAD R12 can't handle long file names, even with File-Ex's help.
  360. Apparently it doesn't accept the short-name aliases because of the
  361. tilde ('~') character.
  362.  
  363. Some NetRoad versions prior to 1.41 will crash with File-Ex
  364.  
  365. If a 16-bit program forces the file name into lower case, then it
  366. cannot use long filenames.  (One known case is Codewright's Save dialog.)
  367.  
  368. If File-Ex does not seem to work when it's in the StartUp group,
  369. but does work if you close it and re-start it, then there is 
  370. probably some program in the StartUp group (or started from
  371. WIN.INI) that is interfering.  Please see the Help file for more
  372. informaion on using the Delayer program to fix this.

  384. If you encounter insurmountable problems, or just don't like 
  385. the new functions that File-Ex provides, you may need to 
  386. un-install it.
